Like a lawyer in a box. Excellent value for the small business owner. You can dig around on the internet and find some of these forms, but then you never know who was behind designing them. I have lots of NOLO products, and have never had a problem with NOLO. Love the searchable format for the books, I actually own two of them and being able to search through them within the software is very useful. I was able to use this software to clarify a question I had about SOLO 401K plans in about five minutes.
The other reviewers are correct, this is one of those 80/20 situations. You will use 20% of the forms/information 80% of the time. But having the others available is still handy.
The little book included is cute, but not all that valuable. Not exactly sure why it was included.

**Software Layout and Departments
***Cautionary Advice
****Pro’s and Con’s
*Quicken has produced, in my mind, an essential tool for those who want to start a
business, need general information concerning a business deal, or who just want to know
the mechanics of how a business is run. This software provides credible and relevant
information for domestic business issues like how to go about buying into a business,
writing contracts and general tax advice.
**After Installation, the software opens to a dark gray interface. The interface reminds me
of the Microsoft “Works” application. It’s a minimalist, template-based screen. There’s a
four-tab header on the upper right and the heart of the screen is used to either fill out forms
or link to related information.
The sections presented are: Home, Document List, Books and Checklist.
Home–The initial screen where you have links to “Create a document,” “Read a Nolo
(business pdf file) book,” “View a `How to’ checklist,” and “See a Tutorial.”
Document list–Scrolling over you’ll find a separate window with a dropdown menu to
be able to access a 10 listing section ranging from forming an LLC, to tax forms, to buying
real estate, forming or buying a business to hiring workers.
Books tab–This shows a list of five pdf books authored by the co-producer Nolo. The
titles are Starting and Running A Small Business, Tax Savvy For Small Business, The
Manager’s Legal Handbook, How To Write A Business Plan, and Marketing Without
Advertising. There’s also two (2) links to on-line resources.
The Checklist Tab–this is essentially a “How to” screen and it interconnects with
information from other screens in addition to giving a brief explanation to the pre-selected
questions.
Your Little Legal Companion– A free 50-page soft cover book. At first glance, this
book seems to be a physical reference to the software, but it’s not! This is a comical, yes,
a comical book that seems to be addressed to college-aged, male students. There are a lot
of anecdotes with a bit of sagacious advice interspersed. It’s a toss-up as to if it was really
appropriate considering the seriousness of the subject matter.
*** Cautionary advice. My bread-and-butter job is as an account rep/ human resources
administrator here in Miami. So, I’m fairly familiar with many of the business and tax
laws as it pertains to corporations. Not a full comprehension, as these laws vary by
jurisdiction and by year. It’s is headache keeping up with the changes, to be quite honest.
As it pertains to the software and in particular to one of the free pdf -books, Tax Savvy For
Small Business, I do have a small bone to pick with the authors. The authors rightly claim
that if there’s a misappropriation of any kind, the IRS can audit your business at any time
and can go back as far as they deem necessary. But it is my understanding that records:
payroll, retirement and tax filing records have to be kept for upto seven (7) years, not six
(6) as the authors claim. In the State of Florida, files are routinely kept in a separate
storage unit after the 3rd year as office space is a premium. And, after the 10th year,
typically, the files are destroyed. What is also common now is that all files are digitized,
so there’s only a need to have signed legal contracts readily available.
As it pertains to the pdf book, Marketing Without Advertising, the authors spare no
expense in stating that “traditional” advertising is a total waste of money but as an industry will continue because in their words:
1. Business owners are content to think that advertising works (without any verifiable
proof)
2. There are no other alternative methods of communicating the business presently.
3. Bankers expect to see “advertising costs” as a part of the business model.
I’m not certain that they’ve made a convincing case against traditional advertising.
Everyday we see the effects of commercials, coupons as well as token items letting us
know that a certain business or product is available. Should we scrap the old model
completely? No. But, I think we should also allow for other methods of communication
to arise.
****Pro’s and Con’s
Pro’s
+All-in-one software is loaded with credible and useful information without the,
sometimes, wrenching jargon that makes “talking business” a foreign language to many.
+Great price for the forms, the 5 pdf books and simple to understand explanations
available.
+The information is updated yearly.
+Extra on-line resources available. (Still not sure about the free, comic book included)
Con’s
-Only a Windows/PC based platform. (With an Apple computer, you’ll need a virtual
platform and a copy of Windows to use this software.)
Recap- Great software, great price. Almost anyone in business can garner useful
information from this software program.

This product was crazy in the value to price ratio. Most importantly for me, were all the tax forms – but the software also interfaces online to provide updates, and SOOO much more.
The program is brain dead easy to use and everything works very fast (at least on my system) and I will use it to design my contracts for my business, next quarter.
I really liked the product. And it also gives you a link for a free gift – in this case it was a PDF booklet on working with Contractor Workers, which is perfect, because I am a contract worker!
I also loved the easy links into the big NOLO databases for more indepth information.
I liked this product so much that I am going to buy the HOME version for writing out a will/living trust.
I’ve always used NOLO to write my own contracts for my LLC – and now with Intuit partnered with NOLO – this is a powerhouse partnership.
I think you will be pleased with this offering.
I snipped the list of what is available from the NOLO website. And pasted it below – so you wouldn’t have to go looking for it:

As the owner of a new small business, these contracts/forms/books have been quite valuable to me. While I know that some are already available online, it’s nice to have all of this information so readily available. There is also a web update feature on this program where you can get the latest information to keep current. I actually discovered this reading other reviews, so thanks for posting that! Awesome! My CPA is already impressed with how “on top of my game” I’ve been. I owe a big thanks to this product and to the other reviewers for pointing out how to get the most out of it. I have to say I love all of the NOLO publications. They are so informative!

This is a handy reference software utility that can help by assembling a variety of information in one place, so you don’t have to have 30 different Google windows open looking for different forms and documents.
The software generally provides three different sets of things:
1) A list of legal documents that the software generates for you by asking you to answer questions in a user-friendly manner (think of the way you enter data in the tax-preparation software). Once finished, you can change, print, print-preview, or export to .RTF or .txt files.
2) Four HTML books integrated in the software package and one PDF book (“How to write a business plan”) which you can read in your PDF reader of choice. This is an actual 298-page NOLO book
3) Checklists – it’s a blend of a “How To” and a “ToDo List” on what steps you need to take to accomplish specific tasks (eg “Write a Business Plan” or “How to Hire Workers”.
The software comes with free updates until the end of 2010, and already right after you install it, there are updates available.
Optionally they have two bonus items if you decide to register the software: you get an online coupon code for $10 off a purchase of $10 or more at their store, and you also receive another NOLO book, “Negotiate the Best Lease”. The book is in a PDF file, but the installation starts with an .EXE file which creates a Program Group and things like that.
As with all reference material, they do not replace an actual attorney, accountant or field-expert, so be sure to further research or ask for advice if you are not sure about something.
The software itself is functional, spartan and lightweight, and does what it is supposed to do, which is a plus for people with older/slower computers. And that’s how it is supposed to be, it is a business reference program, not a multimedia application
