Is it better to book flights/hostels now, nearer, or very close to the time?

Ive had a crazy travelling idea for next summer, I’m not sure if it will work thats why I need your opinion ;)..

We are planning to head out June-July’ish. I have looked at flights from Ryanair, Jet2 and Easyjet airlines and hostels with www.hostelbooker.com.
My Original plan was to book several cheap flights to certain destinations around europe ie from > Ibiza > Barcelona > Paris > Amsterdam >.
I was going to book hostels and stay 3 nights in each location. All in all this worked out to be around £450.

That is a fairly cheap price but I am sure I could get a better one. Do you think it would be cheaper to book nearer the time?

My other idea was to just book a flight and a hostel to one location and from there find a cheap flight and hostel in another location, travel there, and so and so forth until the funds run out forcing a flight home. I quite like this adventurous approach, however I’m not quite sure if it is practical.

What do you think/suggest I should do?

Cheers!
Andy

    Depends.

Budget airlines business model give cheaper prices to early bookers. Ie the first 50% of seats are sold at a massive discount. Then as you get closer to departure then the price goes up.

Normal airlines are the opposite, whereby they want to fill the remaining seats at any cost, so will sell them at a loss.
